2009 Racing Season Highlights- Weekly competition at both Mahoning
Valley Speedway and Sundance Vacation Speedway
For more then a decade, Todd Baer of New tripoli, PA has been a
threat for his competition in short track asphalt racing and his
success stems from running a variety of racetracks in a multitude of
divisions.
Baer began his racing career in the Pro 4 division at the Mahoning
Valley Speedway in 1997 and won his first feature event during his
rookie year. He was named “Rookie of the Year” and set his sights on
the following seaon.
He scored three feature victories the folloing year
and was named “Most Improved Driver”. He finished off the year third
in the point standings before scoring three more feature victories
and finishing the 1999 season as the runner up in the division
standings.
The 2001 and 2002 seasons brought a total of eight feature victoies
and he nearly won the 2002 title, but was forced to settle for
second once again. He completed every lap in the 2002 season and
soared to victory five times.
Baer began 2004 with five featire wins in the first six events and
then went on to close ou the season with three more feature wins. He
lost the championship by a mere two points. During that year the
seasoned veteran and his HB Motorsports team headed to the Race of
Champions in Oswego, NY and won the asphalt portion of the Mini
Stock class.
With all of the success in racing so far, Baer and his team made the
leap into the Modified division in 2005. Although the learning curve
was intense, Baer managed to gain valuable knowledge in the open
wheeled cars with engines that create monster horsepower.
Although he didn’t win a feature in his rookie season as a Modified
driver, Baer became known as a contender and top five and ten weekly
runner at both Mahoning Valley and Mountain Speedway in St. Johns,
PA.
He and his team decided to make a full run at Mountain in 2009 and
notched his first feature win in the process. A championship
contender all year, he finished the season third in the overall
points standings and was named “Most Improved Driver”.
Even without a Modified feature win in the 2010 season, Baer was
ultra-comtetitive and fisished off the year as the runner-up in the
series points. He also competed in Mountain’s Sport Modified
division and nothed his first featue win in the division and
finished third in the overall points.
Baer struggled a bit during the 2011 season, but the teams “never
give up” attitude paid dividends in a huge was. A mide season crash
in the Sport Modified division forced a complete rebuild of his
mount. Although me missed two weeks of Sport Modified action, he
rebounded in an extreme was, as he dominated the season-ending “King
of the Mountain” and drove off to victory. Despite missing those two
races he still finished fifth in th points standings. He also
competed in the Modified division and scored a career-best second in
the Modified point standings.
Todd Baer has become a household name in short track racing and he
noted that his success in all of the divisions that he’s raced and
at all of the tracks that he’s been to, that he wouldn’t be able to
do what he loves and to be as competitive as he is without a great
team and very supportive sponsors. Look for another stout season by
Baer in both the Modified and Sport Modified this season!
